Starting My Photography Business
I’ve always dreamed of starting my own business of some kind. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and use my creative talents in some way to make a living for myself and my family. In the past, I was very scared to take this hobby that I loved doing for fun and actually start charging people for it. I now know that it’s perfectly normal to ask for payments and expect some sort of reimbursement for your time and skills, but for the longest time I was really genuinely just scared that I would mess something up, so I never tried to ask for payment or reach out to any potential “clients”. Thankfully after speaking to many other photographers as well as getting some kind words of encouragement from my professors, I think now is the time to finally take a chance and take this hobby of mine a little more seriously! Thankfully this isn’t a journey I’ll be taking alone, however. I have my amazing younger brother Keaton who is also extremely excited to help me start this professional photography adventure.
My brother Keaton picked up the hobby of photography during COVID-19 when he purchased an old Canon film camera off eBay and started shooting with it! I had been shooting photos of cars every day for my main job for the past 4 years so I honestly had fallen out of love for photography at the time. When you shoot the same 35 photos of multiple cars every single day for many years, photography can turn into a very monotonous form of art. It really didn’t even feel like art or a talent or anything. It was just the same thing with every car and I had totally stopped taking my camera places with me and stopped trying to learn about the craft and practice. It wasn’t until I saw Keaton shooting photos, getting them developed, and editing them that I realized just how fun and creative photography could really be if you did something besides car photography for dealerships. Since then Keaton and I have bought an amazing professional full-frame Sony camera and decided to shoot photoshoots for people! I love doing photoshoots with clients because the creative process of meeting them, shooting photos, editing the photos, and then seeing the huge smiles on their faces when they see the final product is so infectious! I’m so thankful that through Keaton’s passion for photos, I was able to reintroduce myself to the world and realized that it’s just fun to mix it up!
With KG Creative we are mostly focusing on Portrait Photography of people for now because that’s what I have the most experience with (besides cars obviously), and I absolutely love meeting new clients and helping them reach their dream vision! We are steadily building our portfolio right now and trying to shoot more and more every day with people who are looking for a photographer. I’m currently looking for people who need their senior photos taken because we have a really great 50mm portrait lens that makes those look amazing! I could write about photography and my passion for it all day, but I think I need to wrap things up here for this blog. Keaton and I are also extremely interested in learning and improving our video skills so that is something that I may also write about in the future! Anyway, thanks so much for reading my second blog if you’ve made it this far! Keaton and I have a very long road in front of us as we learn how to run our own business, but I know there are no other brothers who are better built for it than he and I!
